December is our favorite time to vacation and this year we went on a trip to Senegal. This was my second trip to Africa and I was excited to embrace all of this experience. Senegal is located along the coastline in West Africa. The flying time from Atlanta into Dakar, the capital of Senegal is approximately 14 hours. Although the flight is long, you immediately forget about it and inhale the warm air while walking through the airport.

Prior to arriving we arranged our tours with Ali from Andaando Travel Tours of Senegal and Gambia. He curated an experience which included a combination of  culture,  adventure, leisure and luxury.

Experience Goree Island

Our first stop was to Goree Island, a quaint island off the coast and where we visited the Maison de esclaves. This Slave museum and memorial is where you will see the Door of No Return. This door led millions of men, women and children to the slave boats that took them to the New World.

It is a powerful symbol of the brutality that existed during the slave trade. Seeing this and viewing the shackles and cells in which they lived brought tears to my eyes. It was an overwhelming experience that I will never forget.

A Night in Lompoul Desert

For our night of adventure we stayed a night at the Lompoul Ecolodge. Lompoul is a small desert located in the southern part of the country. Along with 20 other brave souls we slept overnight in tents in the middle of nowhere and witnessed the most beautiful sunset.

As we rode through the many towns during our trip to Senegal we saw lots of children playing in the streets and enjoying their lives.

Relax in Saly

The weather in December is a warm 90 degrees Celsius and with no humidity, the evenings are mild and comfortable. Saly is a seaside resort and is where we experienced a combination of leisure and luxury. It is quaint town that is full of intimate coffee shops as well as bakeries with lots of french pastries and bread. We stayed in a beautiful VRBO (vacation rental by owner) that included a housekeeper and chef.  The private pool was absolutely perfect and just the right temperature. This was definitely the highlight of our trip to Senegal.

Senegal is a beautiful country that is full of immense culture. From the flavorful food to the beautiful people, Senegal should definitely be on your bucket list. This was by far one of my favorite and most adventurous vacations, I look forward to returning to Africa.
