After recently downsizing, my first major task was an apartment closet organization project. I will admit I do have a good sized closet. Since I am limited on storage space I had to creatively find ways to use the closet for both storage of personal items and clothes. Initially the closet was a place to dump everything, it lacked organization. It was easy to simply close the door and walk away from the chaos. I was adjusting to my new space and keeping myself busy and occupied or perhaps I didn’t want to do it. A recent need to find a missing dress led me to my organization project.
Let’s start with the before photos…
Mismatched hangers, oversized storage containers, shoes everyone, this was the norm. It was definitely time to reorganize this space for both functionality and peace of mind.
The empty closet…
The first task was to empty out the closet and sort through all of the clothes. I was able to fill a bag with items I no longer needed along with the all the hangers to give away. Once it was empty I was able to see the space and come up with a strategy to fit everything.
I found that I was able to reuse some of the containers that I already had for scarves and other non-hanging clothes. Immediately I felt a sense of organization after color coordinating the clothes onto grey velvet hangers. While the sweaters were stored into the LACKISAR storage bags.
The process continued until everything had a place and was looking clean, organized, and beautiful. Before it was complete I purchased some closet garment bags to store my winter things and a small rug to cover the utility box.
And now for the big reveal!
Everything now belonged in a place. The hats were hung, photos and knick knacks properly stored, shoes in place and finally I have peace of mind. This project took just a weekend to complete and I have to tell you that I am loving this space. This easy DIY apartment closet organization task was very affordable and easy to complete and now I have extra space to go shopping!
