Has being in isolation taken its toll on you, check out these 5 ways to practice self-care while in isolation. We are 5 months into a world of chaos and adjusting to disruption isn’t always easy. Most often it requires time and patience. This pandemic has forced many of us to find routines that enable us to care for ourselves while sheltering in place and experiencing isolation. Creating blocks of time throughout the day where I am able to focus on me is a priority. It has required me to quiet my spirit and surround myself with positive energy.
Devotion
I believe that prayer changes everything. My time of daily prayer and devotion sets the tone for my day. These few minutes allow me to align myself with the Word of God and receive necessary inspiration. On the days that I am rushed and neglect to do this, I often lack focus. The Our Daily Bread app has become a quick source, it provides a scripture and devotional to reflect and meditate on throughout the day. I often couple this with listening to my favorite gospel songs.
Journaling
Earlier this year I started going to counseling, to help me understand some of the emotions that I was experiencing. The hormonal changes of menopause played a huge part and I have learned to journal to clear my head. It helps me make important connections between my feelings and behaviors. Journaling has enabled me to let go of negative thoughts and enhance my self-awareness. Taking all of that weight off of my mind reduces my anxiety and stress levels and allows me to sleep more peacefully.
Exercise/Walking
There is something to be said about getting your sweat on. Exercising allows me to release stress and anxiety in a positive way that benefits me. I work out with my trainer on a zoom call once a week. She challenges me during this hour and has taught me how to properly stretch and use my own body weight to tone my muscles. I also try to keep my steps up daily so that I am continuously burning calories and doing some sort of cardio. Exercise is especially important now because it can reduce stress, prevent weight gain and improve sleep.
Drinking Water
Earlier this summer I did a challenge to drink a gallon of water everyday for a week. I learned that when you consume at least half your body weight in ounces you will have more energy, clearer skin, less bloating and fewer issues with constipation. Now that sounds like a win-win to me. Drinking water throughout the day enables me to stay hydrated and keeps me full. I snack less during the day and my skin is definitely smoother and brighter.
Sleep
And yes, I have saved the best for last! I have never truly appreciated the benefits of getting a full night of rest. Adequate sleep is just as important as exercising. It improves moods, increases energy levels as well as decreases irritability and depression. Since the beginning of menopause my sleepless nights have outnumbered my restful nights. Tossing and turning was a nightly routine. Daily exercising and not eating late at night helps my body relax so that I am able to sleep. On the days that I struggle I find that a cup of Chamomile tea an hour before bed time helps tremendously.
2020 has definitely helped me to embrace the importance of practicing self-care while in isolation. Discovering these healthy habits has made me a better version of myself, I am more productive and happier. Taking time out to love yourself should always be a priority. Slow down, re-center and focus on you!
